Our History

Transfer Beach Park
The Ladysmith Seniors Centre has a long and meaningful history rooted in community connection and support for seniors.

Early Beginnings

The origins of the Centre can be traced back to the Ladysmith Old Age Pensioners Society, which existed as early as 1940. Earlier records are limited, though a Ladysmith resident, Hugh Thornley, served on the first Federal Board of Old Age Pensioners in 1927.

Old age pensions were first introduced in 1927, providing $20 per month through a means-tested program. The B.C. Old Age Pensioners Organization (BCOAPO) was formed in 1932 and became fully established by 1937.

Growth in Ladysmith

The Ladysmith society became Branch #9 of the BCOAPO in 1961. When the Ladysmith Health Centre was built in 1965, space was provided for seniors’ activities.

Although the branch became inactive in 1967, it was revived in 1969 under new leadership.

Building a Community Space

In 1974, the Ladysmith and District Seniors Activity Society was formed with the goal of creating a dedicated activity centre. With support from the New Horizons program, the Town of Ladysmith, the provincial government, and the local community, a new space was developed and officially opened in 1979.

This marked a significant step forward, allowing for expanded programming, including social events, games, and community gatherings.

Transition and Expansion

Over time, membership grew and the need for more space and updated facilities became clear. In 2003, the Ladysmith branch chose to withdraw from the BCOAPO, allowing it to retain its resources locally and focus on its evolving role as a social and activity-based organization.

A New Home

After exploring several expansion options, a new purpose-built facility was developed as part of a larger Town of Ladysmith project.

The current Ladysmith Seniors Centre officially opened in June 2010, providing a modern, accessible space that continues to support a vibrant and growing community.
